Prof Hamanth Kasan takes office as IWA President

The International Water Association (IWA) is delighted to announce that Professor Hamanth Kasan officially assumed the role of the Association’s President at the conclusion of the 2024 World Water Congress & Exhibition, held from 11-15 August in Toronto, Canada. Succeeding Tom Mollenkopf, Professor Kasan steps into this leadership position with a distinguished career in the global water sector extending over three decades.

Professor Kasan’s extensive experience in the sector spans 34 years, marked by leadership roles across academia, utilities, and international development agencies. As an Honorary Professor at the Institute of Water and Wastewater Research, he has advanced world-class training and research in African water services. His tenure at Rand Water, Africa’s largest water utility, is particularly notable, where he led a team of scientists and engineers in ensuring delivery of high-quality water to over 16 million people.

An IWA Distinguished Fellow, Professor Kasan has played a pivotal role in shaping the IWA’s strategic direction. He has advanced IWA’s role in the Africa region, fostering inclusivity and growth within the sector. His leadership has also been instrumental in securing significant grants, expanding global membership, and enhancing the IWA’s digital and publishing platforms.

As President, Professor Kasan brings a wealth of experience, vision, and integrity to the role. His deep understanding of IWA’s operations, governance, and global challenges positions him to lead the Association towards continued innovation and impact in the water sector.

Additionally, Dr Rose Kaggwa and Dr. Ir. Mohmad Asari bin Daud have been newly appointed respectively as Senior Vice President and Vice President of IWA, following election by IWA’s Governing Assembly. Dr Kaggwa, a noted industrial chemist from Uganda with over three decades of experience in water and sanitation, serves as the Senior Director of Business and Scientific Services at Uganda’s National Water and Sewerage Corporation. Dr. Asari, an accomplished engineer and the current President of the Malaysian Water Association, brings extensive experience from his roles in both public and private sectors, alongside significant contributions to the water industry across ASEAN countries. Both leaders are expected to leverage their expertise to further IWA’s mission globally.
